Family Education Centre

CASE STUDY

WordPress website design with Learning Management System, multiple online courses, live events, and Membership Portal.

“…feedback is stellar!!! People here love you. You have really nailed a lot of what we wanted with very little direction. You rock!”

OVERVIEW

The FEC is a not-for-profit that had a static, insecure website with multiple log-ins creating a less-than-optimal user experience for their clients. Within 5 months of working with us, they had a new, brand-fitting, dynamic website with elearning, eCommerce, live events and a membership platform all built into one seamless experience.

WEB DESIGN, BRANDING, LMS, MEMBERSHIP, EVENT MANAGEMENT
The Family Education Centre is a non-profit organization that helps parents develop well-grounded, caring and thriving children and families.

They are in the Greater Toronto Area, of Ontario, Canada.

Services they offer include:

In-class training
Facebook Lives
Online Courses for sale
Parenting Resource Library for members
And more!

FINAL PRODUCT

"I cannot believe the level to which you get us. You didn't even know our organization a year ago and in a short time you've captured everything we were seeking, including capturing the work we've done internally to expand our marketing campaign and our anchor message tip of the week. You amaze me, really."

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

BEFORE

When you're scared of your website, there's a problem!

Over the last year, the Family Education Centre became disenchanted with their website and were afraid to make updates to it. This was a major problem for them because they’re a non-profit organization and they have to carry a lot of the load themselves due to financial restrictions.

They were getting hit with a lot of malware attacks, had issues with the theme and setup, things were going missing, colours changes were difficult, functions were not working as they should, and images weren’t fitting correctly and more.

They never touched it because they were paranoid that it would “blow-up” again! That meant that for every change, edit or addition, they had to pay someone to do it for them, which was weighing heavily on their bottom line, crippling their growth and stunting their ability to help their clients.

All they wanted was a website that was beautiful (something they could be proud of), did was it was supposed to do and was easy for them to maintain.

…we were introduced through one of our clients who had done some amazing work with them over the years (Grace Churchill) and it was like missing puzzle pieces finding one another to complete a gorgeous branding puzzle. 😉

"...our staff listing went missing and our logos all were gone...we had a lot of hack attempts..."

Timelines

We met in January 2018. Once we understood their goals and needs, we settled on a May 2018 delivery date. From start to finish: Four months.

Goals

To have a website that excited them, that they could fearlessly manage, an LMS, smart user flow, membership access, event management, and ecommerce.

Budget

As a not-for-profit their resources were limited. When an idea came up that would be out of range, we found a (often better) workable solution.

OUR PROCESS

Brand colours

Since we were digging in anyway, we decided it was a good idea to update their logo a bit.

We updated it with newer shapes, colours and changed the balance of their name and the circles.

We sent them a document with different colours and their meanings with a focus on their target audience.

In the end we went with a very similar colour pairing with just a splash more vibrancy to the colours.

Visual Research

We sent the team a few website samples to feel out how far we could go creatively.

They were very open to pushing the boundaries on the creative side of things while not alienating their brand or audience.

Knowing this helped us develop the first draft of the site.

Design Project Plan

Having a solid project plan in place is critical to the success of any project.

We are visual people, so we use a visual project management tool!

This also helps the copywriter stay on track and know what’s needed.

This was shared with Lynn at the FEC as well so she could always get an update as to where we were were with the project.

Home Page Layout

To be sure that we were hitting all the right elements, we created a home page layout skeleton.

This was just a starting place to get things moving.

Once we started to dig in to the design items changed and moved around, which is totally normal.

Sometimes you don’t know how something is going to feel until you see it.

Menu Layout

While we already knew what pages we were building, we like to showcase the menu layout upfront (sometimes pages that weren’t thought of pop up in this process).

We also adjusted some of the names of the pages to be sure we were being straight-forward and clear.

FINALLY...The Design

Once we had all of this, it was time for us to dig in.

We always build the home page first as it dictates what the rest of the pages will look like. We used circle elements on the home page, which means we pulled circles into the design in other places, etc.

Upon approval of the main look and feel for the home page, we went ahead and build the other pages.

THE OUTCOME

AFTER

"It's exactly what we wanted!"

The final product was delivered and they are thrilled…which means we’re also thrilled!

Our goal is to create products (like a website) people love and want to use.

We believe we accomplished that with this project.

The visuals are just one piece of the entire pie.

The website is not just a place for them to share about their organization, but it is a functioning membership website with 12 online courses for sale, a learning management platform so users can access their courses and complete quizzes, as well as a place where people can buy tickets to live events.

It looks great, it works really well, and it’s easy for them to manage.

A look at what they received:

  • New Logo
  • Website Designed
  • Learning Management System
  • Multi-Level Membership Portal
  • eCommerce
  • Event Management
  • 17-Step Security Checklist
  • Mailchimp Setup

"You have taken our site to a whole new level! Honestly, it blew my mind when I saw it. (And) I really am loving that I have knowledge in this and that I'm not relying on others, working with you is really increasing my capacity and I appreciate that so much. Thank you thank you thank you!"
